Hi friends! If you’re reading this—I’m calling you a friend.
You’ve likely gathered from my handle, I’m Olivia Snow, founder and principal designer of Mother’s Daughter Design—a residential and commercial design studio based in Salt Lake City. I took the leap and launched my own business in spring of 2023 right as I was diving into another big role: motherhood. First came my daughter, Loretta, and the business wasn’t far behind. A year of leaps.
I grew up in a family of wonderful and talented creatives—artists and writers but mostly designers. My mother, Robyn, and her mother, Barbara, both ran successful design businesses in Utah. I grew up on the job and was immersed from birth in the quest for beautiful, meaningful spaces and relationships. I was a built-in assistant, styling my dollhouses with client samples I’d swiped and scribbling up pretend invoices like it was my job.
These women were masters of their craft, and it showed in everything they did—from how they entertained to how they made a bed or wrapped a gift. No detail went untouched. I grew up with a beautiful backdrop, but I also saw the late nights and hard work that made it all possible, and because of that, I swore I’d never follow in their footsteps. Fate had different plans for me and design kept calling me back.
A few years ago, just as I was starting my first job as a designer, I lost both my mother and grandmother within months of each other. By the time I found my footing, I was expecting my own daughter. Suddenly, I was juggling motherhood and design, and—against all my I’ll never do that declarations—I felt pulled to start my own firm. My whole life people told me, you are your mother’s daughter. As a kid, I’d roll my eyes, but as I thought about what was next, it started to feel more like a superpower. Mother’s Daughter Design was it—a third-generation design business.
I’ve been running my business quietly for a couple of years, finally dipping my toes into Instagram at the end of last year. I have an amazing little team (truly couldn’t do this without them).
A Place to Liv is a mix of business and life—project reveals from Mother’s Daughter alongside personal musings, design insights, favorite finds, and truthfully, whatever else feels right. A little corner dedicated to the places we live. My hope is that you feel right at home here.
xx Liv
